I'm not familiar with the international spy novels.  I'm willing to learn of
them though if you have the info.  I'm always looking for good reads.

Subject: [ArmchairReaders2] My September List of Joyful Reading!

I really had a good time this month as you can see. Here's my list and reviews.
September:
1. The Quilter’s Apprentice, Jennifer Chiaverini – contemporary fiction. This
is the first in the Elm Creek Quilts series. Sarah McClure relocated to
Waterford, Pa. so that her husband could take a new job. Though she was tired
of being an accountant, she was at least employed in their former residence.
Now she was out looking, unsuccessfully, for another job. In the meantime, she
agrees to help a woman, Sylvia Compson who has contracted her husband’s
services, to clear out and organize her estate for sale. She soon learns that
Sylvia is a master quilter and bargains for lessons. A friendship soon evolves
and the lives of both mesh and mysteries are unfolded. Rating: 4/5 (9/2)
2. Round Robin, Jennifer Chiaverini – contemporary fiction. This is the second
book in the Elm Creek Quilts series. Sarah and Sylvia have now decided to join
forces and start a business together, a quilters camp. The friendships formed
in the first novel were tested, examined and strengthened. Each vignette helped
us get to know and bond with each member of the Elm Creek Quilters. I must
admit to shedding a tear or two at the end. This is definitely one of my
recommended reads. Rating: 5/5 (9/4)
3. Cross-Country Quilters, Jennifer Chiaverini – contemporary fiction. The
more I read this series the more appreciate this author’s style of writing. I
love how she draws the reader into the story and makes you feel apart of the
story. Though I have enjoyed many books of late, this author is now a member of
my favorite authors list. I will continue to follow her works. In this novel,
the quilters’ camp is a thriving success. It attracts quilters nationwide from
various backgrounds. We are introduced to a new cast of characters who then
form a sub-group of quilters. We get to see how this subset forms and bonds.
The members cross various backgrounds, socioeconomic levels, age spans, etc.,
but the common thread that binds is the love of quilting. This series has
sparked my interest in quilting. I’m sure if I continue following this series,
I may pursue quilting lessons myself, lol. Rating: 5/5 (9/5)
4. Art in Blood, P.N. Elrod – paranormal mystery, fiction. This is the 4th book
in the Vampire Files series. This time Jack Fleming solicits the help of his
partner and girlfriend to solve the murder of a young, promising artist
recently

met. We also see the relationship between Bobbye and Jack deepens. Will she
decide to live an eternal life with Jack? Will Jack support her decision?
Rating: 4/5 (9/6)
5. A Good Yarn, Debbie Macomber – contemporary romance, fiction. This is the
2nd book of the series. A new group of knitters form in a sock class. As in
the 1st, each member is different but brings something special to cement a new
friendship.
6. Divine Justice, David Baldacci – suspense, fiction, mystery. This audio
book was the 3rd in the Camel Club series. It was fantastic! It was read by
one of my favorite narrators and the sound effects were great. In this novel,
Oliver may have bitten off more than he could chew. He leaves Washington
knowing that the CIA has his friends under observation and rather risking the
life of one his friends he decides to relocate without letting anyone know his
new destination. A top notch hunter is on his track. Oliver stumbles into a
drug ring in a small remote town of Pennsylvania. He also finds a woman that he
has formed a romantic interest in. This was a fast paced story that will keep
your interest from the very beginning. Rating: 5/5 (9/8)
7. Bones to Ashes, Kathy Reich – mystery. This was an audio presentation of a
book read earlier. It had been awhile since I’d read Reich’s work and I used
this audio book to refresh my memory of the series. Rating: 4/5 (9/9)
8. Three Bedrooms, One Corpse, Charlaine Harris – fiction, mystery, romance,
light suspense. The audio book version of the 3rd book in the Aurora Teagarden
series. Aurora was asked to meet her mom’s clients at a house because she was
running late for the appointment. While escorting them thru the house, a corpse
is found in one of the bedrooms. She, the corpse, happened to be a rival realty
agent. Again Aurora finds herself at the scene of a crime and naturally her
curiosity has her seeking answers. In her personal life she has to make a
decision as to the continuation of her relationship with her cleric boyfriend
or

follow her new interests with the new man in town. Rating: 4/5 (9/9)
9. The Rocky Roadto Romance, Janet Evanovich – humor, contemporary romance,
fiction. I so loved this audio book. I had so many chuckles. I highly
recommend this light, quick, humorous read. Rating: 5/5
10. The Julius House, Charlaine Harris – fiction, mystery, romance, light
suspense. The audio book version of the 4th book in the Aurora Teagarden
series. Aurora is now finally married to Martin whom she met in the last
novel. She was given this mysterious house as a wedding gift from her husband.
11. Dead & Gone, Charlaine Harris – paranormal, suspense, mystery, romance.
This is the 9th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. It had been awhile since
I’d last read a book in this series. Consequently, it took me awhile to catch
the thread of the story. There were details forgotten that were not clarified
until about a third of the way into the novel. I wish the author would recap
the

storyline, somewhat, since lengthy intervals between novels could cause a
reader

to forget the storyline especially when there is a tv series that drastically
alters the storyline. Rating: 3/5 (9/11)
12. Dead in the Family, Charlaine Harris – paranormal, suspense, mystery. My
goodness! There was so much going on in this novel. The fairies, weres and
vampires had drama and issues to be resolved. Naturally Sookie and Jason are
caught in the midst of it all. I can’t begin to summarize the story for fear of
spoiling it for others. Needless to say, this is a must read. So much is
revealed. Rating: 5/5 (9/12)
13. Loving Jack, Nora Roberts – contemporary romance, fiction. Jack needed a
place away from her family to write a novel. Her cousin told her she could
sublet the house he was using for the duration. She soon discovers that her
cousin swindled her out of her money for the house she sublet was not available
for sublease as she discovered when the true owner returned from a business
trip. She truly loved this house and negotiated with the owner a way for them
both to stay within the spacious house. She would do all the cooking for her
board. Soon their fledgling friendship blossoms to romance. The outcome is
predictable but the journey to the end made this a delightful read. I did catch
a couple of sighs coming from within. Rating: 5/5. (9/12/10)
14. What a Girl Wants, Kristin Billerbeck – contemporary fiction. At 31,
Ashley Stockingdale finds that she is “always the bridesmaid…”, and she is
wondering why? She has a good job, brains, looks and some money. She decides to
change her attitude and life perspective in order to improve the romance
prospectus. Rating: 4/5 (9/14)
15. Dead Girls Don’t Wear Diamonds, Nancy Martin – contemporary fiction,
romance, humor. The 2nd in the Blackbird Sisters series. Nora is supposed to
write for the society page of her local newspaper but again she finds the need
to help solve a murder. The wife of an old flame was drowned in her pool. Nora
is convinced of the husband’s innocence and sets out to prove it. This story
had its hilarious segments especially the ones involving her pregnant sister,
Libby. Rating: 5/5 (9/15)
16. Dead Over Heels, Charlaine Harris – contemporary fiction, mystery. The 5th
in the Aurora Teagarden series, an audio book. Imagine doing yard work. A
plane flies by then circles, returns, and drops something onto your lawn. This
something turns out to be the body of a policeman who seems to hate your guts.
This is the situation Aurora finds herself in. Throughout the novel several
relationships are strained. Some end while others fortify. Aurora also has to
deal with her sterility issues. This is another hit for Mrs. Harris. Rating:
5/5
17. The Pauper and the Pregnant Princess, Nancy Martin – fantasy romance,
fiction. This was a delightful, quick read from an author I’m beginning to
follow. I enjoyed the fantasy. Princess Cordelia is determined she will not
inherit the throne and its responsibilities. She drafted a plan to become
pregnant so that her father would disinherit her. Rating: 4/5.
18. The Cop and the Chorus Girl, Nancy Martin – contemporary fiction, romance.
Though unlikely, the premise of the novel is possible. While undercover Flynn
notices a bride running out of a church screaming for help. She takes off her
boot to ram into the door in efforts to prevent it from opening. Since no one
came to her aid, she sees Flynn on his motorcycle, runs over, hops on and the
adventures begin. Rating: 4/5
19. Heatwave, Richard Hardcastle – mystery, suspense. This is the series the
television show is based. It was mediocre yet enjoyable. Rating: 3/5 (an
audio book)
20. Confessions of a Shopaholic, Sophie Kinsella – contemporary fiction. Well
I struggled to finish this novel. I’m OCD about finishing a novel started. It
did get better toward the end and frankly the blurb for the next in the series
sounds interesting. I don’t think I’ll rush to read it though. Rating: 3/5
(9/23/10)
21. Susannah’s Garden, Debbie Macomber – contemporary fiction, some mystery,
lite romance. This is the next in the Blossom Street series. Susannah, an
unsatisfied 5th grade teacher, wife and mother of 2 teens uses her summer to
find closure for an unrequited teen love, settle her mom into assisted living
and coming to terms about her dad and her marriage. It really was a very good
book. Rating: 5/5. (9/23/10)
22. Devil Bones, Kathy Reichs – mystery, contemporary fiction. Temperance
Brennan has finally come to terms about her relationship with Andrew Ryan. In
the previous book he felt for the sake of his drug dependent daughter he needed
to make another attempt in salvaging a relationship with her mother. Meanwhile
Tempe is driven to find the real story behind the bones uncovered. Are there
murders conducted in order to have victims for sacrifice in a sordid religious
ritual? Rating: 4/5 (an audio book, 9/25)
23. 206 Bones, Kathy Reichs, mystery, suspense, contemporary fiction. This
was the best of this series that I’ve read in quite awhile. Granny murders seem
to be occurring in Montreal. A new pathologist has been hired. Someone is
trying to sabotage Tempe’s reputation. Tempe’s relationship with Ryan is still
strained. So much was going on. It really kept my interest from the very
beginning. My eyes continue to glass over with the preponderance of technical
jargon, but this time it did not distract me from enjoying the flow of the
story. Rating: 5/5 (an audio book, 9/27)
24. Sizzling Sixteen, Janet Evanovich – humor, contemporary fiction. I was
laughing from the very beginning. I just love Lula! Although it is time for
the author to tone back this food obsession. That aspect of the storyline is
getting old, stale, etc. I also feel it’s time to put Stephanie with Ranger
(even though he is my man). I think it would really add some spice, excitement,
humor, etc, to the storyline. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future
holds. Rating: 4/5 (9/28)
