I was just recalling how many Rahman projects were
shelved. It is really quite a revelation (or atleast,
it was to me). I seem to have remembered 25 projects,
but I'm sure I missed a couple more. Anyway, here is
my list. Others may add as they will. I havne't listed
movies that he was offered, but didn't do, like
"Yaadein". I haven't listed movies he was rumored to
do, like "9 Nelalu" in Telugu. I also have resisted
adding "Godfather" to this list!! Maybe I should check
out Gopal's Tripod page for more... come to think of
it, I should have done that before I made this list!!
01. Theekul Viral Vaithal - Starring Prabhu Deva,
directed by Rajiv Menon. Supposed to have been his
second movie, after Minisara Kanavu
02. Mudal Mudalaga - Arvind Swamy, Dont remember the
director, but it was one of the 100 movies that was to
have Arvind Swamy & A R R
03. Engineer - Arvind Swamy - This one ran into a lot
of problems. I remember that they shot half the movie
and then had to rewrite the entire script, cos some
other movie that released had the same story... I
think both were lifted from "A Walk In The Clouds", if
I'm not mistaken. It was later shelved. Very recently
there were rumors of it being revived, but I guess it
isn't so.
04. Tara ram pum pum - Preity Zinta - Directed by
Shekar Kapur. Supposed to have been Preity Zinta's
debut flick.
05. Yelelo - Directed by Partiban - This one was on
and off quite a few times, if I recall correctly.
06. Pop Album with Colonial Cousins - Part of a Sony 3
album deal of which Vande Mataram was probably the
first.
07. Pop Album with Asha Bhonsle - Rahman still says he
will do it when he comes up with something worthy of
Asha Bhonsle... maybe the Rahman way of saying "Not
right now. Maybe later".
08. Album in Bengali - Matthew Islam said Rahman was
to do this album.
09. Taj Mahal IMAX - In limbo. May show signs of life
soon.
10. Ram - Would have been Rahman's first Kannada film.
Arjun Sarja and Madhuri Dixit starrer.
11. Ittefaq - Dont remember much about this.
12. Waqqaya - DOnt remember much about this either.
13. Shikar - Jackie Shroff & Shah Rukh Khan. Directed
by the Subash the Ghai. Songs may have been reused in
Taal.
14. Motherland - Directed by the Subash the Ghai.
Again shelved.
15. Rajiv Menon's dream project on the weavers of
Kanchipuram
16. Robot - Kamal Hassan. Directed by Shankar. In
limbo. Keeps getting delusions of life from time to
time.
17. The Return Of The Thief Of Bhagdad - Megastar
Chiranjeevi. Could have been Rahman's first
composition for one of India's most versatile actors.
Again, in the funny place called limbo.
18. 9:30 - 10:00 - Directed by Vasanth. I dont even
know how to pronounce the name!!
19. Rashq - Aamir Khan & Shah Rukh Khan - Directed by
Raj Kumar Santhoshi. A failed attempt at bringing the
best Khan and the most popular Khan together.
20. Jaggubhai - Rajnikanth. Directed by K.S.
Ravikumar. Rajnikanth - K.S.Ravikumar... 'nuff said!!
21. NDTV Theme album - Announced during the launch of
the 24 hour NDTV news channel. No hope now.
22. Mangal Pandey soundtrack: The background score of
the movie. Not likely now that the movie is a flop.
23. Prashant - Prashant - The movie after his Star. If
this was to include dubbed songs again, we are lucky
it didn't release. Prashanth would have become the dub
star of Rahman... Jodi, Star and this, if it was to
be.
24. Samjhautha Express - Amitabh Bachchan - Rakesh
Mehra or whatever he spells his name as now. Would
have been Rahman's first score for Big Bachchan?.
25. The Last Revolutionary - Abhishiek Bachchan
That's my list!! Anymore?
