The wait is over :) ------------- How would you rate a movie that has an amazing script, an outstanding screenplay, superb direction, beautiful cinematography, brilliant and perfect performances, and excellent music & breathtaking background score??? In simple words… Awesome!!! Rakeysh Mehra brings to you Rang de Basanti, a movie that shall be a benchmark in innovative storytelling and filmmaking. Every aspect of the movie is simply perfect.
The movie starts of with the black & white scene of Sharman Joshi & Siddarth in a jail and Alice reading from her grandfather’s diary. Her producers turn her documentary-making proposal down due to budgetary constraints. She then decides to go to India and make it on her own. Here she meets Soha, Aamir, Sharman and Kunal, who are all college students except for Aamir who has passed out college 5 years back but still likes hanging out there. After failed attempts at casting college students for the various roles of freedom fighters, Alice bounces the idea to her new friends who finally agree to be a part of it. Madhavan plays the role of a pilot who later dies in a crash. This forms the turning point of the story. In the documentary, Aamir plays Chandrashekar Azad, Sharman plays Raj Guru, Siddharth plays Bhagat Singh and Atul plays Ramprasad Bismal. The movie beautifully mixes the pre-independence era and the present. In fact, it is done so amazingly well that not for once do you feel the movie just jumped from its rhythm or is telling a different story altogether. This is something that deserves full marks, not only for its innovative idea but also because of the flow it maintained throughout. By the end of the movie, the past and the present look so similar that you feel only the dates have changed, but the sequences of the freedom struggle still continues. The movie scores in all departments. The director has extracted amazing performances from the entire cast and crew. Sharman joshi as Sukhi delivers his best performance so far. His one-liners are simply superb. His comic and dramatic scenes are amazing. Soha Ali Khan performs well. Madhavan in a special appearance is perfect. He looks good and performs with grace and is a natural. Kunal Kapoor as Aslam is another natural performer. He underplays his role to perfection. Atul Kulkarni as Laxman is brilliant in the role of a “sainik” with his heart in his roots. Siddharth is amazing on his role as Karan. Alice Patten as Sue is beautiful and gives in a good performance. Anupam Kher and Waheeda Rehman don’t have much of a role. Kiron Kher and Om Puri perform well in their brief roles. Aamir Khan as D.J. (Daljeet Singh) is simply what an actor should be. At 40, he convinces you that he is 26-30. And that itself is an achievement. His comic timing is superb. His one-liners are wacky. His body language and expressions are amazing. His Punjabi accent is perfect. His emotional and dramatic scenes are outstanding. A.K. as D.J. is the perfectionist at his career best. Aamir as Chandrashekar Azad is again brilliant and his body language and expressions are completely different from DJ. He just keeps on amazing you till the end. A.R.Rahman’s music is brilliant. Although most of the songs are played in the background, it still fits well with the movie. His background music is outstanding. Notice the remixed version of ‘Khalbali’ in the opening title tracks. His work is pure class in RDB. The lyrics and dialogues by Prasoon Joshi are superb. Cinematography by Binod Pradhan is excellent. The movie has something for everyone, be it young or old, single or with family. This movie is worth repeated viewings. Here is a movie with a powerful script and story to tell and it is told not in an ordinary way but a unique way, something that has not been shown in Hindi cinema before. The feeling that one gets after watching RDB is exactly what Aamir and his gang feels in the middle of RDB after they watch Alice’s documentary. They were touched, and at the end of the movie, so was I, and so will you.
