Hi I'd thought that I should
share some info regarding raga vasanti and theeyil
Raga Vasanti
has a basic scale of S R2 G3 P D1 S S D1 P G3 R2 S. It is a newly
introduced raga into the classical music sampradaya as there aren't any
traditional compositions in this raga. It hasn't found a place in most of
the old treatises either. There is also a doubt about its parent raga, where
the could be's are the 25th mela Mararanjini, 26th mela Charukesi as u said
and 27th mela Sarasangi. Theeyil has a very constructive melody which
requires attentive listening to
understand its structure. Now let's indulge :
The Pallavi pure uses all notes
denoting raga vasanti.
The 1st Caranam
"mazhalayin neer vaanggi
mazheyea azhuvathu pol
Thaayin yir thanggi thanayan
azhuvaano?
uyirai thantavalin uyirai
Kappaana kadanai Theerpaana
Thangam Pole Irunthaval Thaan
Sarukaipole Anatha Naal
Singampole Iruntha Mahan
Seviliyaipole Avaana?"
has usage of swaras R1, M1
and N1 which equates to raga vakulaabharanam of the 14th mela.
The 2nd Caranam
"Ore Sollil Ore Ulakam Amma,
Ulakellam Ore Solum Amma"
Still maintaning usage of raga
vakulaabaranam.
"Nee Sumantha Pillaiyayi
Naanirunthen Amma
Naan Sumakkum Pillaiyayi nee aanai
amma"
a beautifull transition
happens making the raga brighter when the swara D2 (28th mela Raga
Harikaambhoji occurs) is introduced at amma and its back to the basic
when D1 is introduced again at the second amma. Fantastic isn't it.
"Ennakedhum aanathenuna
unnaku veru pillai undu
Unnakethum aanathuna yennaku veru thayirukka
?"
these lines are purely in vasanti as
in the pallavi
"Nenjai ooti
valarthavalai,
kanil madiyayi sumanthavalai
manil vittu
viduvana?
manathil mattum sumapana?"
As in thangam pole in 1st
caranam
3rd Caranam
As in the 1st caranam in raga
vakulabaranam
So there you are, hope i've
enlighten you.
Thanks
Regards
Keshav

Vasanthi (Bhoopkali/Bhoopeshri)
Hii
After reading several posts abt Theeyil song frm
GF abt the raga..yes..its is Carnatic Raga Vasanthi & the
Hindustani equivalent is Raga Bhoopkali or Bhoopeshri. It has all
shuddha swaras except Dha & it omits Madhyam & Nishad though
in some cases it may add a Teevra Madhyam being from the Marwa thaat
(Raga Family). So its Sa Re Ga Pa Dha(Komal) Sa. ARR's used this raga
in Taj Mahal (Adi manjakkizhange), Mudhalvan (Kurukku chiruthavale)
& JanaGanaMana album (Hariharan's rendition of Desh ka salam).
Theeyil has an exceptional quality of moving ur soul...thats ARR
magic!
Njoy...

Vaasanthi closes atribute Theeyil not pure though,
the caranam has presences of other notes.. Being similar to his
previous works like 'adi manjakkizhangge' (TAJ MAHAL) and of course
Kurrukku Chiruttavalea (MUDHALVAN).

hi Friends, my rankings here : What abt
urs??
1. Kaatril Vor Vaarthaai - in shades of Raag
Natabhairavi & Sindhubhairavi as sometimes remind me of
certain places in thillana thillana from Muththu.
2. Theeyil song has been wonderfully classically
treated, where in Carnatic Music, it is called Raag Vaasanthi.
![]()
3. Ilamai - well westernized song ![]()
4. Innisai though in (Raag Hindolam in
Carnatic) i am disappointed by
too much usage of Jathis & Swarams (Surs) leads to
confusion at one moment and he has given 3 tracks for this
with very little differences, i cud find.
His
stamp/punch is missing when compared to Minsaara Kanna song in
Padaiyappa or Kannodu Kaanbathellam in Jeans or Maargazhi
Thingallalavaa in Sangamam ![]()
5. Dhinam Deepavali - 'A' funny folk (even sounds
like daandiya beat) ![]()
6. Kamma karaiyil - Kooththu (no comments) ![]()
70% is the net result when compared to his
previous works. Pankaj ![]()
