There's also another simple software called VCD cutter. You can select the part of the movie u want and extract it. It also gives you in mp3 format too. I use this software to extract audio speech.
On the dvd part it's a bit tricky... coz you need to extract the chapter first. There is also a DVD cutter but i have not used it.
