Your lifestyle is very much different from the lifestyle in cinema industry. How do you manage that?
There's no connection between the art you do and the baggage that might come along with it.
In my early years in the industry, I was playing for many people... I have seen people do all kind of things - tobacco, alcohol, women... But, Ilayaraaja was a sharp contrast... He was an inspiration for me... During the one-and-half-years I played for Ilayaraja, I learnt 1 thing - music can also be done this way - without all these bad habits. IR doesnt drink, doesnt eat meat, wakes up quite early and is ready with notes by 7 am... So, he was an example for me. 
After that, I found my own path - Sufism. There is this anecdote - a man went to Prophet Mohammed and asked him "I want the whole world coming behind me... How do I achieve it?" Prophet replied, "remove the world and pleasures from ur heart, the whole universe comes to u". It is contradictory, but it is the truth! Because, then you concentrate only on the right thing. Else, other things pull you apart in a different direction!
Once you are there - once you leave out all these habits, you dont feel like going back and looking at all these! Then, you lead a normal life - you get married, have kids.

There is a deep-rooted spirituality in you - I am not talking abt just going to temples/mosques, but about soul-searching spirituality in you.
However, you also have this motivation to succeed in the commercial circuit. There is a conflict there!
Very important question! People go to forest to become a saint and to leave all worldy pleasures... Dont you think this is easy. What's tough is staying in the midst of all these and still avoiding them!!!
Ya.. got that... there is a difference between starving and abstinence.
Not eating when you dont hav food is starving but, avoiding food even when there is plenty of it - abstinence or fasting!
There's a very tiny line between these two - you have to realise what you have to get to... This realisation is a long process - has to be done step-by-step!
There were many disturbances during that time. After Roja, when I was doing my next film - Like - the comp would crash at a crucial time, power would go off jus before I saved the files!
Whenever I felt, I am reaching the next stage in spirituality, suddenly the world will pull me apart - a big success will pull me back. The search then starts again. Then you again realise what you want.

When you did ur first film, you were 23 ot24 with not much experience about the world - u had tech/music knowledge, but not experience. How did u have the foresight/formula to change the entire face of the music. What made you do something totally new?
I had no intention of changing the music totally... (chuckes)
 While doing Roja, I had no intention of lasting for 15-20 years. I thought, "This is my last film. let me finish this and retire and then relax." That was my mindset. That's why I did not accept many films at that time. After Roja, offers poured in, but I accepted just one. Again I thought, "ok.. this is my last film... let me just retire after this". Because, I had worked for close to 10-15 years by then. Right from when I was 11, I was working for people aged 50-60. So, mentally, you become old!!!! (chuckles)
Before ROJA, this was my schedule.
9 am - 9 pm in recording studios - playing for others.
9pm 5 am - composing jingles.
That leaves jus 4 hours for sleep! So, I was totally tired!

When I accepted Roja, I stopped both of these - playing for others and composing jingles. So, focus was on Roja. After finishing Roja, I wanted to relax - but Roja became a hit! Then something new came in - that was the love of the people. I am not talking about just recognition. I have got recognition even when I was a kid - I played on TV on "Wonder Balloon" program.  But this was different - This is more than recognition. This is love!
Then, I moved on to Hindi films. Had never dreamt of it!
Then, I started doing music as something that heals!

So, changing the music totally was not your ambition?
no... definitely not!!

What do you want to achieve?
No plans!!!

There are cultural misunderstandings. Then, there is hatred. Because of some small stupid things some individuals do, a whole community or a whole country gets affected. I think it is very important that Individual people must make efforts to bridge the gaps and change them. There's a proverb - "Cleanse the bad with the good" If you dont cleanse the bad, its intensity increases.
There is so much of anti-American feeling among muslims and vice versa. So, a small incident can cause a big consequence.
But individuals can change all these -like Gandhi, Prophet Mohammed, Jesus Christ. If I can not totally change the world, I want to be at least a drop in the ocean - at least some effort from my side.
