Hi,

I would like to take a shot at answering this
question.

If u r saying the first song he retuned was even
before 'pudhiya mugam' kannukku mai azhagu song...then
i would reckon it should be from the movie
GENTLEMAN-yen veetu thotathil.

If i remember correctly this tune is actually used in
singing a particular bhajan song sung at hindu poojas.
It goes something like "ganne leela jyoti namo namo,
gnaana roopa swaroopa namo namo" and so on(sorry .. i
m sure i got the lyrics wrong).

But rahman wonderfully i wud say polished the tune of
that song, added his own huge dose of originality and
viola....we had i wud say one of the most romantic
classical duets, till date i can listen to that song
and not feel bored or anything.

Another notable thing i wud say is that, this song
also started the trend within all rahman-shanker
combos, where even though the album wud be fraught
with fun-filled dhool tp songs-huge dance numbers,
there wil always be this one soft romantic classical
based song in it-which would be i wud say one of the
biggest hits of the album as it wud impress the
so-called masses and classes!!!

e.g:
GENTLEMAN - yen veetu thotathil(SPB is king!)

KAADHALAN - ennavalae(major carnatic singer
Unnikrishnan came into national limelight with this
song)

INDIAN - telephone manipol(the stanzas ooze with
carnatic classical icing, plus harini had her major
first masses hit)

JEANS - kannodu kaanbadhellam(introduced major
carnatic songer Nithyashree into mainstream tamil
movies)

MUDHALVAN - azhagaana ratchasiyae( even though this
song was given a folky feel, it was out and out a
wonderfully playful composition in the raagam
'rithigoula' and ghatam rocked thru the song)

BOYS - alle alle(refrained frm making it sound too
carnatic as well it wud have been out of place in the
movie...but yet again the lone melodious track in the
album)

*ANNIYAN - iyengaaru veetu azhagi & kumaari( Shankar
tried it again with harris jayaraj...going for 2
songs, first being a very very basic composition in
raagam naattai and a much better job in the latter
song thanks to a zestful rendering by shankar
mahadevan...
PS: I have always wondered how rahman cud have rocked
in this movie so much..seriyaana theeni[proper fodder]
for rahman's versatility..i mean the iyengar angle so
the carnatic based songs, the wester loverboy angle
where he cud go all rock and hip-hop,then we have the
avenger vigilante, where he cud go all modern
operatic[without ripping of PASSION OF THE CHRIST
which is wat harris jayaraj eventually did]..but alas
one wil never kno wat rahman cud have done...jus like
we can never kno wat rahman had composed for droh
kaal..one of those things...

LAST BUT NOT LEAST
SIVAJI - sahana and sahara( the first one has jus been
named song of the year by sun TV so enuf said abt
that, and in the latter he actually used a thirupaavai
merging it with a titantic melancholy flute
feel..kudos)

AHEM...er...i jus saw the whole mail frm top... i
guess i slightly veered of in a tangent(horrible
understatement)...But i have answered the question to
my best knowledge on the top and sorry for
belaboring...but jus that it was a worthy interesting
observation.

Thanks..

Srinath
