Gulzar
While Obama may have been asked to give up his Blackberry, Bollywood’s
own poet-extraordinaire, Gulzar has embraced the wireless technology.

After
successfully avoiding getting caught in the trap of mobile phones,
Gulzar has finally taken to using one. All thanks to close friend AR
Rahman.

Recently, during the recording of a song for Mani
Ratnam’s new film, Gulzar, in all his old-worldly ways insisted on
getting a tune transferred to a tape for his reference.

To
which Rahman said, ‘No one uses the cassette these days. I bought
something for you’, and smiling he stepped out of the room.

“Only
to return with an iPhone,” chuckles Gulzar. “And yes, it was about time
I started using new technology. I did it for the sake of my music, and
no other reason,” he adds.

And understandably so, the content of
Gulzar’s poetry too shows a progressive trend, keeping up with the
current times. Explains Gulzar, “The ‘Tu mera dost hai’ track from
Yuvvraaj is dear to me because all our songs have always referred to
the beloved as ‘mehbooba’, ‘maashuqa’ and so on. Never a ‘dost’. Isn’t
that the way relationships are perceived?

Telling about his new phone, Gulzar says, “What I like about the mobile
is the SMS. It’s a wonderful form of economic expression.

But
yes, I thoroughly dislike the abbreviations used while messaging, and
would never resort to those. I use my cell phone only for sending
messages, and of course, the music.”

Talking about Rahman and
his friendship, Gulzar says, “Rahman and I share more than just a
cordial working relationship. After Pancham (RD Burman) and Vishal
(Bhardwaj), Rahman is the only composer I vibe perfectly with.

Recently, we were working together on Subhash Ghai’s Yuvvraaj and Mani Ratnam’s
film simultaneously.”
