Box Office Update: Delhi 6 takes the best opening of 2009
Saturday, February 21, 2009

Delhi 6 has taken the best opening of 2009 so far. The film will put up strong
first weekend numbers given the strong collections from the multiplexes and
single screens in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Baroda, Bangalore, Kanpur etc.
Mumbai is relatively behind. On the other hand, overseas in America, the film
has opened strongly across 89 screens as well.

The Abhishek Bachchan starrer had difficulty finding a proper release Friday
due to revenue share dispute between the multiplexes and UTV. As such the
Saturday opening collections are higher than Friday's. Though it remains to be
seen how Sunday and of course the critical Monday will head, as that will
determine whether Delhi 6 goes on to be a big hit at the box office. But the
early word of mouth on the film appears to be positive.

Bachchan Jr.'s last big solo opener was couple years back. His next release is
a big one, headed to be Mani Ratnam's romantic thriller opposite Aishwarya Rai
which will only release towards Diwali in India.

Director Rakesh Mehra's previous film Rang De Basanti did over 50 crores
business at the box office and Delhi 6 will look to do something comparable.

The next couple months don't have many major releases coming up. Kal Kisne
Dekha launching Jackie Bhagnani, is probably the next notable Bollywood
release, in April.
