Ace director Maniratnam's 'Roja', which starred Arvind Swamy and Madhoo in
lead roles, released in the early nineties and became an overnight hit. The
film, which was about the deep-rooted terrorism in Kashmir Valley, created a
nation-wide furore when dubbed into Hindi with the same title. The film also
marked the musical debut of the Oscar award-winning A.R. Rahman.

Efforts are now made, after almost two decades of the film's release, to dub
the film into English and take it to Hollywood. Rahman, on learning about
the progress of the dubbing work into English, has come forward on his own
(despite his busy schedule) to make a telling and significant contribution.

Rahman is said to be planning to score a new set of background music for the
English version of 'Roja' while deciding to retain the songs as they are.
Whether or not the title of the film would be also be altered/ changed to
'attract' the English audience would be known in a couple of weeks.

This is the first time in the history of Tamil films that a Tamil film is
dubbed into English to cater to the Hollywood audience. What sort of
response that film generates is something that's to be waited and judged!
