It’s been a great year for music! Capping the year at pole position on the
Radio Mirchi Top 100 Year End Special,is the top song of 2009 Chor

Bazaari from Love Aaj Kal — which spent a whopping 25 weeks on the Mirchi Top
20.

At a close second, having spent a healthy 34 weeks on the chart, is the
inimitable Masakalli from the box office turkey that was Delhi 6, proof that a
good tune can stand on its own feet if it connects with the public. SRK’s Haule
Haule from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which spent 40 weeks on the chart, is a
justified No. 3. While the shout-along anthem of 2009, Jai Ho from Slumdog
Millionaire, makes it to the No. 4 spot with 40 weeks too on the chart; and
Dhan Te Nan from Kaminey, which created a buzz and sustained a 24-week run,
ends up at No. 5. For more on this hot list, turn to our music page.

Going by the Mirchi Top 20 every week over 2009, it really seems that Delhi 6
was the most popular film with about six entries on the charts. Moreover, it
also seems like a good melody has been the common thread running through the
songs last year, and it looks like the same will happen this year too.
Importantly, the Mirchi countdown is one of the oldest and most respected music
charts in the country and is seen as the gold standard for the industry. This
countdown represents the musical tastes of the entire country, not just of a
single radio channel.

Hitmaker Pritam, excited by his lead position on the Radio Mirchi Top 100 Year
End Special, said, “The year was exceptionally good for me, my songs from Love
Aaj Kal, Tum Mile, Ajab Prem.. and Billu were all loved by listeners. Apart
from Chor Bazaari, the Mirchi Top 100 features many of my other songs. It is
one of the oldest, most authentic and looked forward to countdowns on radio.”
Love Aaj Kal’s director Imtiaz Ali, added, “It’s fantastic to know that Chor
Bazaari is the No. 1 song.. You don’t know the popularity of your song until
something like this happens.”

Known for his nuanced lyrics, Prasoon Joshi, whose Masakalli weighed in at No.
2, remarked, “This is proof of the immense popularity of melodious songs as
Radio Mirchi reaches out to the maximum number of listeners all over India.”
Sukhwinder Singh (whose Jai Ho has two Grammy nominations) has three songs on
the Mirchi Top 100 and said, “Haule Haule is by far the most romantic song I
have sung. Jai Ho, too, was very special, it was all about celebration. A.R.
Rehman and I have made a winning combination right from our Chaiyya Chaiyya
days. But I never expected Dhan Te Nan to become the kind of hit that it did.”
Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan is also all praise for this track. “Dhan Te
Nan is fit to be a part of the Top 5 songs in the Mirchi Top 100. It took the
nation by storm and what a cult song it turned out to be,” he said. The actor’s
best buddy Karan Johar said he was “thrilled that songs from Wake Up Sid and
Kurbaan are a part of the Mirchi Top 100 countdown. “Shankar Ehsaan Loy have
made super music this year,” said the filmmaker.

And let’s not forget the upcoming Amit Trivedi who won critical and commercial
acclaim for the songs of Dev D and Iktara and his ‘alternative’ sound. As an
extension of its dominance in the music space, Radio Mirchi also does the
annual ‘Mirchi Music Awards’ which is equivalent to the Indian Grammies and is
clearly one of the most coveted music awards in India.. Tune in and watch this
space for further announcements.
