As a veteran of a few of these, I've learned that the speaker is as important as the topic. Find a topic that is of interest to you, and then ask around as to whether the speaker is known as a good one or not. Most are at least ok, but some are more engaging than others, and are known for different levels of detail.
So, the speaker is important, the topic more so, but the level of detail is what's most important to me. There are so many I want to go to, but I am limited with the schedule and number of sessions available per day.
