Would my running the Maintenance Tool in production put the system in Admin 
mode, and prevent users from working?

Hi,

I sample a an API/FLTR/SQL/ESCL log once in a while to see that the system 
still performs as the last time.

Then there are end to end testing tools that you can use to for example do some 
operation through Mid-Tier or Web-Services.

You can also turn on Server Statistics to find a few things.
