Subject: Re: Server Patch #20 - RPC-Non-Blocking-IO

**
It's in the Config guide pdf pg 297 of ConfigGuide-630.pdf (January
2005)

RPC-Non-Blocking-IO
This parameter enables the AR System on compliant systems to receive
remote procedure calls in a non-blocking mode. Without this setting, the
server must receive an entire RPC header before processing a different
one. With this setting, the system can process multiple headers at the
same time. Set this parameter to T (TRUE) and then restart your AR
System server to run in RPC non-blocking mode. The default for this
parameter is F (FALSE);
use the following syntax to set to TRUE:
RPC-Non-Blocking-IO: T
This functionality is not supported on Windows and Linux operating
systems.
The advantages of RPC-Non-Blocking-IO mode are as follows:
- Prevents remote attackers from disabling RPC services.
- Prevents invalid or corrupt packets from temporarily disabling the
arserverd service.

Important: The following patches must be installed to enable your system
to use this feature. If these patches are not installed, you will see
either an error message, or most of your RPC calls will be blocked.
HP
- PHNE_29210 - HPUX 11.0
- PHNE_29211 - HPUX 11i
Solaris
- 108993-38 - Solaris 8
- 113319-19 - Solaris 9
IBM
Does not specify a specific patch number. There might be multiple file
sets required.
- Fix for Authorized Problem Analysis Report (APAR) IY61602 - AIX 5.3
- Fix for Authorized Problem Analysis Report (APAR) IY61409 - AIX 5.2
- Fix for Authorized Problem Analysis Report (APAR) IY61598 - AIX 5.1

Fred

FYI: It's been an option since 5.1.2 patch 1375

Subject: Server Patch #20 - RPC-Non-Blocking-IO

Hello list,

at the 6.3 p20 release notes it states something about
"RPC-Non-Blocking-IO" and it being mentioned at the "document on
ar.conf" ... I have checked the latest available 6.3 Configuration guide
that is available online, but was not able digging that one up (perhaps
it is hidden somewhere else).

Suppose I might have missed. Does anyone have more insides on that ? ...
when googl'ing for it some stuff comes up, but not really found an
explanation so far.

"SW00252563 Allow AR Plugin Server to receive RPC calls in
non-blocking mode. The configuration parameter "RPC-Non-Blocking-IO"
affects both AR Server and Plugin Server. Check the document on ar.conf
to understand how to setup this parameter."

Thanks,
Robert
