The 5.x and 6.x clients seemed to perform a much more graceful job in 'upgrading' the older clients than what 7.x is doing. I also found that when installing 7.x clients, it leaves the older clients mostly intact due to it installing into different directories.
Do your users install the 7.x client manually or do you use some kind of script or software delivery system. You could have some checks for the client, and uninstall it first, however, there is also an issue with preserving the HOME directory and maybe even moving it to where the new client installs.
