CMDB logging will give you some clues, but not much... You will probably have some difficulty getting CMDB logging to actually write a log, but once you do, it's disappointing. I believe this is a known bug. In some testing at one of my customer sites, it appears that things are being caught in a loop and then the db rolls-back. Unfortunately the InvokeCMDBEngine filters are used in many places and you can't just disable all those filters or you won't have anything you paid for.
This is a serious issue. One of my biggest global customers has already bought "FootPrints" and plans to replace Remedy with it, based on these types of internal functions not being documented, supported, or what was advertised. We're trying to track down the same or similar problem. Phase 2 fires and just hangs the user tool and nothing gets updated when attempting to modify a component. Computer system CI's update fine and components do update for about 5 minutes after restarting the remedy service. Then it stops working again. Thought I'd ask since the best answer Remedy has come up with in 2 months is to disable the filter that invokes the cmdb.....
