If the end result is say greater than an hour, you could advise somebody. In fact you could make this part of the process when entering the dates so that an individual is made aware that their on call is starting at an unacceptable time after their colleagues finishes. You could make it a warning or an error depending on the severity of it. I would probably give them an overriding option which shows that they are aware of the gap and then email the groups manager in the background.
