We were using BMC's configuration discovery tool (formerly Marimba) and fou=
nd that we could not reliably discover machine serial numbers, and it seeme=
d to often depend on the type of hardware being discovered. In particular,=
IIRC, I don't think we were able to reliably get SNs for most Sun servers.=
We were able to get it for many Linux (x86) servers, but not all. In man=
y cases, what was returned was the value of what the "hostid" command retur=
ned, just in decimal rather than hex. I don't believe it had anything to d=
o with rights; it just appeared that the information either was not availab=
le for discovery, or it wasn't running the right command to get it.

Kathy,

Yes. Talk to your Unix admins and ensure that the account set up in discov=
ery has the necessary rights and path variables set up in order to run the =
commands on the Unix servers to gather the information.

Is anybody able to get the serial number from UNIX Solaris machines into BM=
