Hi Ron, I am on 6.3 patch 24 and had a similar problem about 2 years ago. I added a second mailbox and roughly load balanced by sending external mail (customer updates) though one box and internal mail (ticket assignments) out the other. As suggested below I delete after send.
Check your polling interval which by default is 2 minutes as well as the number of emails, default 100, sent per polling. I have not changed the number per polling but dropped the polling to 1 minute. Have not had a problem with outgoing mail since.
