Lisa, The fields that represent values ($ fields) in the join criteria are the ones that need to be indexed, providing they qualify. You cannot really index a character field that is 255 characters in length or above.. Character fields that are indexed need to be of length 254 and below.
The idea is to design a good query around which you can build indexes that can be created if not already created.
