If you are in an Oracle database, use the function TRANSLATE to replace all Alpha characters with either NULL or space or whatever else you wish to.. This will leave the string with only special characters and numerical characters.. I am not sure if TRANSLATE works on MS-SQL but you could give it a shot if MS-SQL is your underlying database.
