I have not done this recently. My experience was that you needed to add a unique attribute to the directory that could be used to retrieve the actual record.
If you are only doing a table-refresh to load data, you will not need this, as the system only performs a single "search". If you are using set-fields or push-fields, the unique max-15-character-key is needed.
