If you want to use the Best Practice Customization mode, you have to create overlay. If you want to use the base customization mode (pre-7.6) than in your dev studio, you have to go to File>SwitchMode> and then select Base Development. Just remember that when you do this, any changes you made to any objects will be cancelled and you will have to redo those and then save again.
