LJ, Thanks for the info. I had used MS VSS with version 5.1.2 of ARS and was the only developer for a project in AZ where we were required to use the external application to check out/in our objects. It was very painful even for a single develper waay back then. Since then I developed an application (in Remedy - big surprise) similar to what is now in ARS with version 7.5 in that it tracks objects by type, allows the def file to be stored as an attachment, but had a status to track the modification from Proposed, Developed, Tested, Released, Withdrawn, (or something like that, it was in 6.0 - a few years a ago). I also used it for data (csv, arx files etc.), reports (used to store the OOB crystal report before modifying - which saved a cusomer's bacon at least once; remember, Janna?), and provided the ability to assign it to a project or task (useful for reporting/metrics). It was useful when customers would say "I just want it out of the box, we don't have (Time/Money, fill in the blank) for ANY modificiations (sound familiar?!). At each meeting and review, I would simply log the requested changes and implement them in the project. Once the project was was over I would perform a report and show the differences between the OOB and modifications Proposed/Released as well as those that were Proposed/Cancelled. Fun tool for metrics that introduced reality into the mix plus showed where schedule was impacted and why (and who)...but I digress.
I have data from at least two of BMC's customers (customer provided, not BMC) that in one case has over 10 developers, only uses the logging feature (not object locking or def creation) in all environments DEV/SIT/PROD; and another where there are less than 10 developers and they use the def file creation feature with slightly modified OOB ITSM and few ongoing modifications without performance issues. One BMC customer is interested in any experiences/warnings/advice in integrating Subversion specifically with 7.5/7.6 of ARSystem using ITSM that has been customized.
