While it doesn't address your question directly, I have to bring up that 8.1 has a huge problem with Flashboards Variables. Other things may load faster, but if you work with Flashboards you should be prepared to have at least two sessions of Developer Studio open. Other than that, I really don't see a performance difference from 7.6.4.
