(Nietzsche) Bagi penduduknya dan para pelancong dari luar negeri, pulau Jawa merupakan pulau terindah di bumi ini dan hampir tak ada yang begitu mengenal dan mencintai pulau ini seperti Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, seorang keturunan Jerman-Belanda. 19 tahun dia mengabdikan hidupnya untuk penelitian. Hasilnya ialah sebuah buku dengan ribuan halaman "lukisan alam" Jawa yang sangat lengkap dalam kata dan gambar. Ditambah lagi tulisannya mengei tanah Batak bagian Selatan di Sumatra, yang pertama kali dia teliti. Sebagian dari pengetahuan Junghuhns mungkin sudah lama lewat - tetapi sebagiannya justru menjadi petunjuk jalan. Para pelindung alam Indonesia bisa menyebutnya sebagai seorang yang sudah memberi peringatan awal mengenai bencana ekologi yang terjadi di Indonesia. Dengan memilih tempat-tempat yang cocok untuk ditanami pohon Kina dia telah menyiapkan sejarah keberhasilan besar perkebunan Kina di Jawa. Dan geografi tanaman di pulau Jawa yang pernah dibuatnya sampai sekarang masih berlaku. Yang paling membedakan Junghuhn dengan rekan-rekan lainnya ialah kepandaiannya menggambarkan alam. Setelah 200 tahun berlalu sejak Junghuhn lahir, pameran dan simposium ini kiranya tidak hanya mengingatkan kita akan kebesarannya sebagai seorang ilmuwan yang penting, tetapi acara ini juga diharapkan, kita masih mau menyibukan diri dengannya. (Nietzsche) The island of Java is for its inhabitants and for many foreign travellers the most beautiful on earth - and few have known it as well and loved it as much as the Dutch-German Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn. He dedicated nineteen years of his life to its exploration. The result was a book of several thousand pages, a portrait of Java in words and pictures. Added to this was his description of the southern Bataklands of Sumatra, which he was the first to thoroughly explore. Some of his discoveries may have long since become obsolete - others however have proven to be trail blazers. Indonesian environmentalists can point to him and his early warnings of ecological catastrophe. With his choice of appropriate locations for the planting of cinchona trees he prepared the way for the great success story of Javanese quinine. And his plant geography (phytogeography) of Java is still valid today. But it is his masterful descriptions of nature which distinguish Junghuhn from most his colleagues. May this exhibition, 200 years after Junghuhn's birth, be not only a memorial to an important scientist, but also an inspiration to learn about and from him. His is a path is worth following.
