I have verified that both the JVM and the database are using UTF-8 encoding.  

Could this be related to using an outdated jdbc driver against the new Alpha
version of the Postgres database?

Currently using this jdbc driver : postgresql-8.4-701.jdbc4.jar
Database: PostgreSQL 9.0alpha4
