Hi, interested parties (of which I count eight people and a pony),

I thought I'd kick off an inaugural email to this mailing list, listing the documents and ideas we have gathered so far, and explain a little bit about where we are with regards to the ADP roadmap.

# THE GENERAL IDEA
Our overall mission with the Artifacts Distribution Platform (ADP for short) is to consolidate our existing main distribution tools into a singular workflow for all official releases.

The basics are described in more detail at https://s.apache.org/adp-idea

If any of you do not have access to this document, do let me know, and I'll ensure you get that.

# SCOPE AND COMPONENTS
A more detailed list of what we envision ADP will cover can be found at https://s.apache.org/adp-brainstorming - this page is open to anyone here to add their ideas to.

As we progress further, we will start establishing more defined goals and methods of implementation in four separate categories:

1. Scope - what will ADP handle (and what will it not handle)
2. Workflows/protocols - how does each segment of a release process currently work, and how do we envision it working in the future 3. Implementation - How do we translate the workflows into programs and interfaces
4. Roadmapping - Defining the individual delivery stages and priorities

I expect we will soon get started on a page that can form the basis for working on these four parts. Each part will probably have its own distinct document, with a main page containing an overview of what we are working on in each segment.

As we get started, I will be notifying this list, and I do encourage discussions to take place here. While the Slack channel is great for bouncing ideas off each other, it would be terribly swell if we could remember to bring those ideas and outcomes back to either the list or the work documents as we progress.

I'll be traveling overseas tomorrow, so I expect the documents won't get properly set up till early next week.

With regards,
Daniel on behalf of the infra team.
