This past Tuesday, Octiber 5th, the City auctioned off many Property and Sewer Tax Liens which produced a tidy profit for the city in my opinion.
However, there is nothing wrong when a city has to balance the books and budget by selling outstanding thousand dollar tax liens on properties abandone by absentee landlords.
My concern is when some homes on the WestSide are auctioned off for less than $20 to $1000 to those who seem to have no intention to occupy this newly acquired site. It is then that there seems to be something that is very wrong with this system.
When it is obvious to me that the $10 IOU to the city is an oversight by the homeowners, the city could forgo the auction on that particular property. Instead, the homeowner now has to pay an additional $100 to $500 to the new lender if they want to regain title to their own property again.
Thereby to me, this practice becone Predatory Lending encouraged by a City who has time and again proven to respect profits over the long time residents of Asbury Park.
There should be a law against crimes of Predatory Loans, you think?
