Coincidences of coincidences. I just got off the phone discussing a
new condemnation assignment for a private country club in a posh
area of LI. The clubhouse and the area was developed by the Whitney
and Vanderbilt families and designed by Warren & Wetmore. I don't
know if many truly appreciate how significant it is that these
reknowned architects designed AP buildings. Whitney Warren was a
cousin of the Vanderbilts. Their first New York commission was the
NY Yacht Club on West 44th St. You have to see this building once
before you die. It is the ultimate Beaux Arts building. This made
them famous and of course they went on to design Grand Central
Terminal among other famous buildings. We should be honored to have
their designs in our city. Others would die to have them. No expense
can or should be spared to see that these buildings are restored.
There can be no thought of demolition or to leave them to further
deterioration. Only barbarians would knock them down.
