SEASIDE PARK — The Borough Council will hear a proposal Wednesday from the owner of Funtown Pier about turning the 77-year-old amusement venue into condominiums.

One of the many businesses that could be affected by any development around Funtown Pier is the Sawmill Cafe restaurant and nightclub. Its owner, Steven D'Onofrio, said he feels for the owners of the pier.

"The general consensus is that Bill (Majors) has done everything possible to make it (the pier) successful," D'Onofrio said. "It's been a gallant attempt, but the fact that he is even considering selling is telling about how well he can be a viable competitor with other amusement venues.

"In Bill's defense, he has been under an enormous amount of pressure in the market from Casino Pier, Great Adventure, the redevelopment of Asbury Park and Atlantic City."

Uh... Does anyone here really think that the redevelopment of Asbury Park is a threat to boardwalks providing entertainment?  I wonder if the rest of the state thinks the boardwalk is coming back in force.  In my opinion, the redevelopment is trying to make Asbury Park more like Deal than Point Pleasant...
