Lighty,
I respectfully disagree. Last year I brought my 3 kids to the arcade
on Asbury's boardwalk a dozen or so times, because I thought it was a
fun, safe place to play. Now, when they want to go to the Arcade, I'll
take them to the Freehold Mall, where they can run around and be kids,
and I don't have to witness the same BS I saw on the Asbury boardwalk,
where kids hustle other kids for money.
Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying Asbury Park is a great place for families right now. I’m saying, I don’t see why it couldn’t be a great family resort again.
I believe that the oceanfront, boardwalk and several blocks from the ocean could be policed a lot easier than the entire town. There’s no reason the town can’t make that area 100% safe. Some people would undoubtedly be upset at the idea of providing more protection to one area than another but the oceanfront is ASBURY’S GREATEST ASSET. Doesn’t it make sense to take full advantage of it? Wouldn’t having people feel safe there help spur the economy by bringing tourists back?
I get the feeling that Asbury thinks throwing some more high-priced condos into town is the answer to their problems. I say provide enough security that the area is safe. If Asbury Partners really wanted the area to take off they’d probably be footing the bill for additional security. There is no reason they can’t make that stretch crime free imo.
It’s money WELL SPENT because it’s more of an investment in tourist revenue than a simple expenditure.
