For a school district that spends more per pupil to educate its
students than any other district in the state, it should come as no
great surprise that the Asbury Park school board was set to spend
$14,000 to send 10 people to an education convention in Los Angeles
before the state insisted it limit that number to four.

What is surprising is that the board wasn't more sensitive to how
that might look to state education officials charged with monitoring
its performance and to taxpayers in suburban districts who regard
Asbury Park as the poster child for reckless spending.

You would also think the board would have been mindful of the
brouhaha created last year when it voted to take legal action to
recover $8,316 from five board members who went to a National School
Boards Association conference in San Francisco, in violation of a
state directive limiting trips there to three members at a cost not
to exceed $4,671.

The current board, which approved the Los Angeles trip last month,
was bent out of shape that the state stepped in at the last minute,
forcing the district to eat $2,350 in nonrefundable tickets and food.

"This is something board members were very upset about," board
President Robert DiSanto said at last week's school board meeting.
Members deplore "a waste of money," he said.
