The problem with the Parents are they are kids tooo. The babys having babys have finally caught up with us. These Parents don't have the educations, alot dropped out of school after giving birth. Yep, that is a major problem, children being raised by parents with little or no parenting skills, and we might expect problems stemming from those environments. More problematic is the lack of respect, honesty, citizenship etc. in children who should know better. Most of my teaching experience has been with adolescents from upper middle-class homes. For too many, in my estimation, winning is everything: cutthroat competition for grades, rampant cheating, lying on applications, and the like. Often the parents would lie to support their kids lies on excuse notes. Parents condone parties where drinking is permitted by minors. What kind of modeling behavior is that? I've known kids who, when asked to pick up their own litter, respond with something like, "That's what they hire janitors for." Older women working in the cafeteria were also seen not worthy of respect. These kids don't wind up on our street corners; after learning how to play the game, it's not hard for them to masquerade in the mainstream. And what's with the mobster appeal cultivated by such shows as the Sopranos? All values issues. All sectors of society.
