BELMAR — A New York City firefighter, in full dress uniform, was
badly beaten outside of Bar Anticipation after marching in the
borough's St. Patrick's Day Parade, police said Thursday.

Matthew Paglioni, 29, of New York was one in a contingent of
representatives from the New York City Fire Department who
participated in Sunday's parade, which drew about 100,000 spectators.

Belmar Detective Sean Pringle characterized the incident as a random
act of violence in which Paglioni was targeted simply because he "was
at the wrong place at the wrong time" when the attack occurred just
after 10:30 p.m.

The victim and two others — his girlfriend and another city
firefighter — were walking along 16th Avenue at Main Street in
Belmar, when they were confronted by a man identified by police as
Jeffrey Jordan, 25, of Howell, who was looking for a fight, Pringle
said.

Jordan had just been thrown out of Bar Anticipation by the business's
bouncers for unknown reasons, Pringle said. Witnesses said Jordan was
spewing profanities at the bouncers as he was escorted from the bar's
grounds, punching street signs as he walked across the street, where
he ran into the victim and his companions, Pringle said.

"He started cursing at (the victim) and yelling at him," Pringle
said. "The victim kept saying, "I don't want any trouble, please
leave us alone, we're here for the parade.' "

Pringle said Jordan managed to isolate Paglioni from his friends, and
then punched him, knocking him to the ground. Jordan then continued
to assault Paglioni until his friend, the other firefighter, managed
to pin Jordan to the ground in the parking lot of the Getty station,
Pringle said. The firefighter restrained the suspect until police
from both Belmar and Lake Como arrived on the scene, he said.

Paglioni, who required surgery after the attack, had his eye socket
broken in four places and also suffered a broken tibia and fibia in
the right leg, with another bone twisted in the attack. A steel rod
had to be implanted in his leg, Pringle said.

He was released Wednesday from Jersey Shore University Medical Center
in Neptune, a hospital employee said Thursday.

Jordan was charged with aggravated assault and lodged in the Monmouth
County Jail in Freehold Township in lieu of $50,000 bail, where he
remained Thursday night, Undersheriff Ted Freeman said.

While the annual parade is billed as a family affair, it's also the
most lucrative day on the calendar for the restaurants and bars of
Belmar and its neighbor, Lake Como. Bar Anticipation, on 16th Avenue,
is one of the largest taverns in the region, straddling the boundary
separating the two towns, with the bar itself located within Lake
Como.
