ASBURY PARK — Police are investigating why an 18-year-old student
would cover up a gunshot wound to his left thigh and attempt to go to
school the next day as if everything were fine.

Around 9:20 Tuesday night, several Drury Lane residents called police
to report hearing the sound of gunshots. Yet when police arrived,
they found no evidence of shots having been fired, Detective Lt. Dave
Kelso said.

At the scene, police interviewed the 18-year-old Asbury Park High
School student, who at the time did not divulge his wound or any
information pertaining to shots being fired, Kelso said. The victim,
whose name Kelso asked be temporarily withheld as police investigate
the matter, concealed the fact that he had been shot.

But when the teen arrived at school Wednesday morning, a school
resource officer noticed the victim's wound and notified police. The
student was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune,
where he was treated for minor injuries, Kelso said.

Who shot him is unclear. Kelso said the angle and type of wound rules
out it being accidentally self-inflicted. The victim did his best to
conceal the wound — he discarded the clothes he wore at the time he
was shot and did not tell his parents of the incident, Kelso said.

"He's giving us little information at this time," Kelso said.
