ASBURY PARK — Police arrested a 41-year-old Neptune man after
authorities said he kicked, punched and robbed a woman early this
morning near the corner of Fifth and Grand avenues.

Around 4:20 a.m., the victim, a 41-year-old Belmar woman, was walking
on Fifth Avenue while a man -- later identified as Jeffrey Evans of
Division Street, Neptune --was apparently harassing another woman in
the area, asking her for money, said Capt. Dave Kelso.

The victim made a comment about his behavior to a third woman in the
area, and then Evans turned his bicycle around and began pedaling
toward the victim, said Kelso.

She ran west on Fifth Avenue, and he jumped off his bicycle and
chased her, police said.

As he approached her, he began to hop into the air, jumping and
kicking, Kelso said.

He kicked the woman in the back of her head, punched her several
times in the face, then rummaged through her pockets and took $80,
police said.

Officer Joel Fiori responded to the area and he got a description of
the man who robbed the victim.

Officer Melinda Casey found Evans a short time later in the area of
Eighth Avenue and Deal Lake Drive. Evans was positively identified by
the victim, said Kelso.

The Belmar woman refused first aid treatment.

Evans was charged with robbery. He also had two outstanding warrants
for his arrest - one for contempt of Asbury Park municipal court and
another from Monmouth County state Superior Court for violation of
probation.

Bail on the robbery charge was set at $10,000.
