Three teens held in thefts from cars AVON: Police have taken three Asbury Park boys into custody, charging them with entering vehicles and stealing items from them, authorities said.
Around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Bradley Beach police warned surrounding communities that four boys had been seen trying to open car doors in their borough. About a half-hour later, Avon Lt. Bob Kepler spotted one of the boys in Avon, but the teen ran away, Police Chief Terry Mahon said. Then Avon Patrolman John Riley spotted another boy, but he also ran, police said. Police chased the teens over the railroad tracks and into Neptune, and with help from a Belmar canine unit, caught three 17-year-olds, Mahon said. All three teens had items, including loose change and electronic devices, stolen from vehicles, he said. Around the same time the boys were spotted by the officers, police began receiving phone calls from Avon residents whose unlocked vehicles had been entered. Police received three such calls Tuesday night and got a fourth Wednesday morning, Mahon said. Police are continuing their investigation, but Mahon said all three boys are expected to be charged with burglary, theft, resisting arrest and eluding police in Avon. Meanwhile, Bradley Beach police plan to file three counts of burglary and theft charges against the boys, who are also accused of entering three unlocked vehicles in that community, said Bradley Beach Police Chief Leonard A.
