There's  "rot" everywhere.  I fear the "rot" I can't see: in the corporate  
boardrooms, the political backrooms, the multinationals which somehow get the  
guns and drugs to the street level while they live in neatly manicured  
"communities."
 
You can curse the darkness, or you can light a candle.
 
I am grateful for all those folks still lighting candles and struggling  to 
create community in Asbury Park.

 
When I read my own post it seemed a bit too "thousand points of light"  
bull-shitake-ish.
 
I don't include gadflies or critics as cursing the darkness.  They are  # 1 
below, not # 2: a critical difference.
 
1. One who forms and expresses judgments of the merits, faults, value,  or 
truth of a matter.

2. One who tends to make harsh or  carping judgments; a faultfinder; a 
malcontent.
