This must be the corner of Bond. The shoring didn't look too good to
me the other day for a foundation that deep.

ASBURY PARK — One construction worker was pulled unconscious from the
rubble after a building foundation partially collapsed at a Mattison
Avenue work site this afternoon.

Co-workers dug out the unconscious man, who was transported to Jersey
Shore University Medical Center with head injuries, according to city
Fire Chief Kevin Keddy.

The unidentified man working in a excavation pit when the foundation
of an adjacent building at 719 Mattison Avenue caved in on him, Keddy
said.

"He was buried in bricks, covered in bricks,'' Keddy said.

Once the site was secured, another, larger portion of concrete came
down, but no one else was injured.

No one was in the building at 719 Mattison when the foundation gave
way. That building may be vacant.

Shirley Forbes, supervising secretary of Catholic Charities Substance
Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program was in her second floor office in a
neighboring building at the time of the accident. She said she heard
"a rumbling sound,'' but thought that was part of the normal construction.

"I looked out and thought, "Oh, are they taking that down too?' ''
Forbes said. She didn't realize there had been an accident until a
co-worker who had been to the scene came back to the office and told
everyone what had happened.
