The Geminids are back, but this year the asteroid that generates this meteor shower is closer to earth than any other time since it was discovered. Should be a brilliant show - 60 to 120 meteors an hour.
Thursday right after evening twilight if you go to the beach and look east/northeast, you might get lucky and catch some long ones trailing across the horizon. Don't get frustrated if you don't. The real show doesn't start until after 10 pm, and it peaks with the meteors right over your head after 2 am Firday morning. Mars is glowing in the sky right now which is also a treat to see. I always post these here because a place like AP, with the low lights over the ocean, is the best place anyhere to see these. And with no lights from Metro Homes ruining the dark sky, it should be doubly good :-( I still think the City should make this an event (for folks like me me who don't sleep and nerds who love space stuff, also like me). It's like having a fireworks show wihout having to pay the Grucci's. Nothing makes you colder than lying still on the ground, so layer layer layer bundle bundle bundle and bring plenty of hot chocolate. Enjoy. Yahoo!
