Ex-mayor begins serving prison term for corruption BY BOB CULLINANE STAFF WRITER FEBRUARY 5, 2008
Despite a plea to serve his time closer to home, former Ocean Township Mayor Terrance D. Weldon reported to a federal prison in Beaumont, Texas shortly before 1 p.m. today to begin his nearly five-year prison sentence. Weldon, 59, who was the first public official to plead guilty in the FBI's massive Operation Bid Rig investigation in Monmouth County, had been assigned to the Texas jail in January, but asked a federal judge to intervene. Citing his own and his wife's medical conditions, Weldon asked U.S. District Court Judge William H. Walls to recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that Weldon serve his term at federal prison in either Fort Dix or Fairton. Following a hearing on Jan. 15, Judge Walls complied with Weldon's request and wrote a letter to the BOP seeking the reassignment He cautioned, however, that the final decision would be made by officials of the BOP. A BOP spokeswoman today said that Weldon was ordered to report to Beaumont, and that he arrived there at 12:47 p.m. Weldon's attorney, Robert Galantucci, could not be reached for comment. Yahoo!
