Scarpelli's pension cut; Weldon's ordered forfeited
BY TRISTAN J. SCHWEIGER • TOMS RIVER BUREAU • FEBRUARY 20, 2008

TRENTON — A state pension board ordered former Ocean Township Mayor Terrance D.
Weldon's approximately $1,661 per month pension forfeited today, according to
the state
Treasury Department.

The Public Employees Retirement System board also significantly reduced the
pension of
former Brick Mayor Joseph C. Scarpelli. The board ordered Scarpelli to forfeit
all pension
benefits accrued from 1998 through 2006, when Scarpelli resigned.

The Scarpelli decision reduces his pension from approximately $1,825 per month
to
approximately $333 per month.

Weldon, who pleaded guilty five years ago to taking cash bribes in return for
official
favors, is serving a 58-month prison sentence at the Beaumont Federal
Correctional
Complex in Texas. Scarpelli, who pleaded guilty in Jan. 2007 to taking bribes,
is serving an
18-month sentence at federal prison in Fort Dix.

In addition to his PERS pension, Weldon, a former Asbury Park fire chief, has a
$5,000 per
month pension under the state Police and Firemen's Retirement system. That
pension has
been suspended during his incarceration, Treasury officials said.
