Ocean cops to go solo with 911

November 25, 2008

The police department is putting the finishing touches on a million-dollar
communication center that will, for the first time since 911 arrived in
Monmouth County 15 years ago, allow the town to take its own 911 calls.

Currently, 911 calls originating in Ocean Township — and in Loch Arbour,
which pays for Ocean's police services — go to the Monmouth County radio room
in
Freehold Township. The radio room then sends police-related calls back to
Ocean, so police dispatchers can send officers to the scene of the emergency.
As of Jan. 5, though, 911 calls originating in Ocean and Loch Arbour will go
directly to the dispatchers sitting in the Ocean Police Department's new
communication center.
The county Sheriff's Office expressed disappointment with the change.
Piacentino, the self-described "heart patient," expressed enthusiasm.
With Ocean now going the way of Belmar, Scott said she hoped other police
departments would not follow. A countywide system saves money for towns and
allows them to work together in case of a disaster, she said.
"The county 911 system is the ultimate shared service," Scott said. "We would
like to offer that service to all municipalities in Monmouth County."
The county is building a facility that will be able to handle call-taking and
dispatching for every police department in the county, including Ocean's, by
2011, she said. Still, she said she understood why Ocean decided not to
wait.

BEHIND THE NEWS

Currently the two fire districts in Ocean Township pay the county some
$20,000 per year to take and dispatch 911 calls related to fire and medical
services. Now that the Police Department plans to handle its own 911
call-taking
and dispatching as of Jan. 5, it has offered to provide those services to the
fire districts, free of charge.

Both districts declined the offer. Most major fires occur at night, and the
Police Department plans to keep only one dispatcher on duty overnight,
explained Brian Conover, president of the Board of Fire Commissioners District
2.

So when the Police Department begins taking its own 911 calls, it will send
the county 911 calls related to fire and medical services, Police Chief
Antonio V. Amodio said.
