ASBURY PARK — Shepard Fairey, the prominent graphic artist, is in town this
week, stenciling his iconic designs and mounting posters on the beachfront
Sunset Pavilion and Asbury Lanes buildings, all part of the independent I'll Be
Your Mirror music festival presented by All Tomorrow's Parties Friday through
Sunday.

"They're all tributes to music and the influence that music has had on me,"
Fairey said Tuesday afternoon while stencil painting record cover designs on
the Ocean Avenue side of the boarded-up pavilion across from the Berkeley
Oceanfront Hotel.

He said the message of the megaphone in the record cover designs is "free
speech; great distances."

He mentioned many performers that are important to him in his own work, among
them Neal Young, The Clash, Bob Dylan — "provacative poliltics delivered with
pleasurable art," he said. On the Asbury Lanes building on Fourth Avenue, he
planned to create a punk icon mural.

Fairey, 41, is based in Los Angeles and is a street artist who became known
early on for his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign, which then
evolved into his "Obey Giant" campaign. He attracted mainstream prominence with
his Barack Obama "Hope" poster.

The weekend music festival centered at Convention Hall but will be at several
venues. It will feature dozens of performers including Public Enemy and
Portishead, which is curating Saturday and Sunday's events.

Fairey will be a participant through his murals, performing a DJ set Sunday
night at Asbury Lanes and participating in a music-related imagery exhibition
with the New York-based Jonathan LeVine Gallery on the boardwalk.

Beachfront developer Madison Marquette owns the Sunset Pavilion, which is still
to be renovated as part of the boardwalk revival. The city approved the murals
being stencil-painted on the building without going through a more
time-consuming process because they are temporary murals, City Manager Terence
Reidy said.
