Hello,

My name is Igor Aquino and I'm interested in participate on GSoC project
called Parallelising ASCEND computations.

I am current working on a project related to parallelising CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics) codes. Our hardware is composed by 5 PS3's.
Right now, I am using just one PS3 (which already has 8 "small" processors
called SPE) to run codes. On a simple benchmark done, PS3 was almost 10
times faster than a home PC. Next steps of my research includes integrating
CFD codes to OpenMP and MPI a run them on a PS3 cluster.

I believe that I can contribute to ASCEND project using my experience in
programming to multiprocessor computers to developer new ASCEND functions
and solvers that run on more than one processor. It would be very nice
seeing solvers running very fast on multiprocessor computers and cluster.

So, what should I do to get more information about the project? How can I
apply? Some questions that I have are:

    * Will be there just one student and one mentor for each project or a
project (like Parallelising ASCEND computations) could have 2 or more
students participating?
    * How does the "process" work? I mean how will mentor and student work
together? Does the mentor just check student's work or does he give
directions and help student if it is necessary?
    * What about the hardware? If we are developing for multicore or cluster
machines, how can I run the programs? In my case, I already have PS3
(running YDL or Fedora) and could use it. But if student don't have these
hardware, what should he do?

I guess it's ok for now. If I have more question I will send other email,
ok? Is there other communication way to talk, like a chat, or we have to
talk using email?

Thank you,
