That's good! The Canvas uses PyGTK for UI elements, Gaphas [http://ascend4.org/Gaphas] (based on Cairo) for drawing and finally the Ascend solver to solve those diagrams. I'd suggest that you go ahead and build Ascend from source and then try running the Canvas. You'll get a fair idea where Canvas stands in terms of Ascend project.
