Thanks for your interest in ASCEND.

I would advise you to build and play around with the tool. It would be
really helpful if you familiarize yourself with the code and try
contributing to it. The link for the bug tracker is http://bugs.ascend4.org.
Feel free to discuss what changes would you like to make.

Have a look at the GUI related projects here,
http://ascend4.org/Student_projects. See what interests you and how would
you like to proceed from here.

I would be happy to assist you with some GUI related tasks once you
familiarize yourself with the working of the tool.
