Hi Karthik Thanks for your interest in our project. I hope that you'll be able to put in a nice proposal. To get started I would suggest you look at our existing solvers, especially IPOPT and CONOPT as examples of optimisation solvers. It might also be valuable to go through the process of implementing some example models and solving them with the current solvers (especially IPOPT, as the only FOSS optimizer that we have currently). My feeling is that parallel solvers will be quite advantageous for problems which are expensive to calculate (perhaps with a lot of thermodynamic properties), and/or for those with many local minima but where a global minimum is required. I find the idea of particle swarm optimisation attractive/interesting in that case. Perhaps you can do some reading about that as well as related approaches eg genetic algorithms and simulated annealing etc. A survey of available open-source codes would be useful, also.
