Thanks! Why on earth did I overlook that? By now, I found a verbatim package 
for LaTeX that isn't _that_ picky when it comes to newlines/blank lines. It's 
a real hack and might break any time the package changes behavior to be more 
in line with the other verbatim packages so: yes, this seems to be exactly 
what I'm after. Yay!

OK. I'll start small then with the patches that fix the verbatim blocks (with 
the {empty} ).
